During the 2017 election year in Austria, Ulli Gladik follows three FPÖ fans (Freedom Party Austria): a waitress, an unemployed person and a civil servant – all of whom come from working class backgrounds. The director mediates their motives and opinions, hopes and grievances. Hereby, she broaches the protagonists’ working conditions and role of trade unions, as well as notions of racism and xenophobia. Dialogue with those “on the far-right” is often deemed problematic. Yet Ulli Gladik manages to create a space that at once bares the everyday experiences and resulting beliefs of her protagonists, while neither legitimising nor triviliasing the underlying violent political ideology.
