In the summer of 2017, Alton Sterling is murdered by police, another racist killing perpetrated by law enforcement. Against this backdrop, Italian filmmaker Roberto Minervini follows his protagonists – residents of black neighborhoods in Louisiana and Mississippi – through their everyday lives. Weaving together several narrative strands, the film captivates its audience with powerfully eloquent characters, fearless female leadership of political movements, and teenage brotherhood in a hostile world. An intimate film portrait shot in black-and-white, moving between public and private spaces, and multiple generations; defined by the pursuit for justice and human dignity in the face of entrenched historical racism and ongoing violence.
