Detroit is a beautiful city when you look at it from a mechanical point of view, says Mike Banks, a key figure of the second generation of Detroit Techno, as he drives through the streets of Detroit. He only wants to be filmed over the shoulder and aims to avoid even more cobbled-together half-truths about the rise and fall of a historic city. His assumptions serve as an allegory in this filmic essay. On the surface, MOTORCITY primarily revolves around the individual protagonists’ burning passion for drag racing and their lovingly souped up cars. On a deeper level, however, it offers a philosophical reflection of realities past and present. Or, as Banks says looking back: »You could see Detroit coming.« The city’s diverse cultural history unfolds along three components: machines, music and work migration.
