Born to the indigenous tribe of the Paiwan, Alifu moves to the far-away capital Taipeh to start a new life. Queer spaces and new chosen kinships allow Alifu to explore love, identity and belonging. Until one day her father calls upon Alifu to assume her inherited role as tribal chief, not knowing that his wish might be hard to accord with her current life. Based on a true story, this moving drama centers on Alifu’s struggle between self-actualization and family obligations interwoven with storylines of Alifu’s companions. The carefully constructed narrative delves into love and disappointment, change and tradition, disease and death – at times like a Taiwanese soap opera, warm-hearted and charming, yet equally provocative and touching.
