A bus stop in Vancouver on a rainy afternoon: Here, Áila (ElleMáijá Tailfeathers) meets Rosie (Violet Nelson) who has just escaped another violent assault by her partner. In solidarity and care, she takes Rosie home with her and encourages her to take first steps towards confronting her experience of violence. Precisely staged, THE BODY REMEMBERS WHEN THE WORLD BROKE OPEN creates intimacy and intensity, featuring two young women of strong character. Shot on 16mm film in long continuous sequences, the film addresses contrasting realities, indigenous self-conceptions and the traumatic experiences of domestic violence.
