Mexico City has nine million inhabitants and only 45 stateowned ambulances. A parallel system has sprung up from the dysfunctional public healthcare system: a system where saving lives – without any proper training or licenses – has become a business model for people who are struggling to survive themselves. Luke Lorentzen’s documentary follows one family who operates a private ambulance as they navigate the congested streets of the sprawling metropolis at full speed. Competition is cut- throat among ambulance drivers and corruption and bribery are rampant as everybody fights for survival in an economy based on systemic shortage. This daily struggle is also taking its physical and mental toll on the protagonists, who are worn out from being exposed to these precarious economic and moral conditions.
