After a seven-day march, three mine workers reach the Bolivian capital La Paz. They want to join the workers’ protests, find a job and start a new life. But the new impressions are overwhelming, opportunities are scarce, and one of them, Elder, falls ill with a high fever. A shaman is brought in to help. The older man’s dark visions of the destruction of La Paz and the end of the world seem mysteriously connected with the young man’s illness. Shot on 16 mm film, EL GRAN MOVIMIENTO is a feverish, unerring and at times enigmatic take on those who are ignored and remain invisible before they eventually disappear altogether. A zoom into the city portrays La Paz as a shadowy network of connections with a rigid separation between rich and poor and an unfair distribution of wealth that calls for a much broader form of healing.
