Justino is a security guard at the port of Manaus, his daughter Vanessa is determined to study medicine. In this urban region on the Amazon river, Justino’s memories of his Desana heritage seem to have long faded – until he is struck by an inexplicable fever and starts to have strange dreams. Returning to his remote home at night he encounters a mysterious wild animal whose indistinct appearance opens up alternative worlds of reality and imagination. Both thrilling and tender, Maya Da-Rin’s feature-film debut is an impressive piece of narrative cinema. A FEBRE tells of a past left behind and spiritual power as a poetic companion. The careful composition and an elaborate sound design underscore the connections between dreams, illness and the complexities of harsh working conditions and a failing healthcare system.
