Uno is the son of a taxi company owner and has a fantastic gift: He can speak to cars. But a new law banning the use of cars that are over 15 years old threatens the company’s existence. Time for King Car, the charismatic leader of the vehicle fleet, to step into the ring and take on the zombies of capitalism. Overhauled, hopped-up and gleaming like new, he has not only Uno in awe as metal and earth, man and machine rub against each other in this retro-futuristic world. Part resistance comedy, part ecothriller, part zombie apocalypse, this outrageous mix combines some of mainstream cinema’s favourite genres. Set in present-day Brazil, Renata Pinheiro’s CARRO REI can be read as an unconventional, unequivocal criticism of Jair Bolsonaro’s populist policies and his denial of the global climate crisis.
