For a documentary film on »street art«, French amateur filmmaker Thierry Guetta was determined to track down the world’s most infamous graffiti artist, Banksy. Upon finally meeting him in Los Angeles, Guetta turns out to be a total rookie in filmmaking, unskilled in nearly everything except pointing the camera at his subjects. Yet Guetta’s oddly compelling character inspires Banksy to reverse the camera onto the filmmaker himself. Not enough, Banksy convinces Guetta to become a street artist under the pseudonym »Mr. Brainwash«. The result is a wild mix of mockumentary, art establishment parody, artist portrayal, and meta-level art film. After 10 years the film has lost none of its pointed humor and acute relevance.
